Summary of the Research Unit

The set up of the Research Unit entitled "Geometry and Physics of Random Spatial Systems" by the German Research Foundation in February 2011 provides a bridge between mathematics and physics. Its object of research is the study of the geometry and physics of random structures in space. On the mathematical side it is all about the development of methods and models of spatial stochastics and, in particular of stochastic geometry. In particular it will be investigated, what relevance these mathematical tools have for the physics of complex structured materials, which draws a line to solid-state and statistical physics. The participating physicists deal inter alia with the analysis of the structure of the galaxy distribution in the universe and mesoscopic structures in micro-emulsions by the developed stochastic methods. The planned research projects, involving also Danish scientists, are mainly of meaning because of the very numerous applications of stochastic geometry in the analysis, modeling and simulation of microscopic and macroscopic geometric structures.
