Kickback in nematic liquid crystals

 

In this talk I consider a system of nonlinear PDEs that describes a thin layer of nematic liquid crystalline fluid. 
In particular, I want to discuss the phenomenon of kickback after switching off a magnetic field. To this end
a related non-local linear PDE is studied. Measurements of the kickback can be used to estimate material
constants of the liquid crystal.
