Abstract

My lecture will explain how one can use Iwasawa theory to strengthen some old results of Gross and Rohrlich on the arithmetic of an important family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication.

Professor Coates studied at the Australian National University, at École Normale Supérieure in Paris and at Trinity College at University of Cambridge. 1969 he was an Assistant PRofessor at Harvard University and 1972 Associate Professor in Stanford. 1975 he was a Cambridge Fellow at Emmanuel College. 1977 he became Professor at the Australian National University, but accepted in 1978 a Professorship at Universität Paris XI in Orsay. 1985 he became Professor at the École Normale Supérieure. From 1986-2012 he was the Sadleirian Professor for Pure Mathematics at the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cambridge.
In the 1970ies he proved with his then-student Andrew Wiles the first general result towards the Conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
1978 he was Invited Speaker at the ICM in Helsinki (The Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves with Complex Multiplication). 1985 he was elected a Fellow der Royal Society. Since 2008 he is member of the Academia Europaea.
