Introduction to the calculus of variations (Winter Semester 2007/08)
- Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Reichel
- Classes: Lecture (1054), Problem class (1055)
- Weekly hours: 4+2
- Audience: mathematics, physics, engineers, natural sciences
Objectives of the lecture "Calculus of Variations" are problems of minimization or maximization. In such problems one tries to minimize/maximize functionals like pathlength, energy, time, resistance, surface-area within a class of admissible functions.
Prerequesites: Multi-dimensional differential- and integral calculus, basics of functional analysis
