Mathematical Modeling in Mechanics (Winter Semester 2007/08)

Contents:

In this lecture we review the mathematical properties
and numerical approximations of nonlinear models in
solid mechanics.

First, we review basic concepts in convex analysis and we study
the analysis and the numerical approximation of variational
inequalities. Then, this will be applied to obstacle problems,
contact problems, friction problems, and finally to infinitesimal
plasticity.

In the second part of the lecture we will discuss modern solution
algorithms with generalized Newton methods for non-smooth
problems. Finally, we consider the extensions of the models and of
appropriate algorithms to finite elasticity and finite plasticity.
