Introduction to Nonlinear Lattice Equations

This three-part lecture series will focus on the dynamics of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou type equations. After seeing some physical motivating examples and a quick background on the linear problem, we will dive into three fundamental structure: solitary waves, breathers and dispersive shock waves (one on each day). I will discuss how to use numerical routines and multiple-scale analysis to analyze each of these structures. I will also show experimental results (pictures/movies) and cite some theorems on the existence of these solutions and the validity of the underlying multi-scale approximations. I will forgo details on the proofs (and experiments), putting more focus instead on an intuitive understanding of these key structures.
