Abstract
We consider special inequalities that concern certain combinations of partial derivatives of vector-valued functions. Korn's inequalities are crucial in linear elasticity, in the sense that they are suitable to prove coercivity of the appearing bilinear forms, from which the existence and uniqueness of minimizers, stability and a priori estimates follow. One focus of my current research is the extension of Korn's inequalities to general (incompatible) matrix fields. Such Korn-Maxwell inequalities were originally developed in infinitesimal gradient plasticity with plastic spin and in the relaxed micromorphic model.
