The Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at Karlsruhe offers students and researchers an attractive environment in an internationally visible university. It thus provides all students with a high level of education, promotes young academics and is active in many areas of mathematical research.

Around 40 lecturers (including 24 professors) and around 80 doctoral students and postdocs research and teach at the department. In addition, we are regularly visited by guest researchers from all over the world. More than 1000 students of mathematics and all students of natural sciences and engineering in the basic mathematical education are taught here.

Research at the department is concentrated in three main areas and is supplemented by many individual projects. The researchers at the faculty have many contacts with scientific institutions all over the world and regularly present their results at major conferences. They are involved as editors of international journals and in all major mathematical associations.

Teacher training is an important task of the department. The Didactics group supervises students for the teaching profession at grammar schools and vocational schools with mathematics as a major and minor subject, and it runs the Mathematics School Laboratory, which has already been visited by over 1000 school classes and by many interested pupils on open days. Events for teachers are also offered on a regular basis.
