Study programs
The KIT Department of Mathematics offers the scientific study programs Mathematics, Technomathematics, Economathematics and Computational and Data Science each with the degrees Bachelor and/or Master of Science. The department is responsible for providing subject-specific and subject-didactic training in mathematics for students enrolled in Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Education. In addition, it contributes to the Engineering Education study program.
Details and the legal framework for all degree programs can be found in the module handbooks and curricula as well as in the study and examination regulations. You can also use the student advisory service at an early stage to clarify individual questions and concerns about your studies.
Scientific degree programs
The BSc/MSc Technomathematics degree programs will be discontinued due to the establishment of the new Bachelor/Master Computational and Data Science degree programs. The BSc will be discontinued in WS 26/27, the MSc in WS 27/28. Enrolled students can of course complete the degree program. With a BSc in Technomathematics you can in principle transfer to the MSc Computational and Data Science or MSc Mathematics. In this case, please contact the Student Advisory Service in good time.
Bachelor of Science
The Bachelor's degree programs
- Mathematics
- Economathematics
- Computational and Data Science
- Technomathematics (course is being phased out; last possible admission to the first semester in winter semester 2025/2026)
are the foundation on which the Master's degree programs of the same names build. After the basic modules in linear algebra and analysis, you will also become familiar with the areas of stochastics, numerical mathematics, algebra/number theory/geometry and higher analysis. On completion of the Bachelor's degree program at KIT, you will be awarded the degree "Bachelor of Science" and will have a broad basic education in mathematics.
Master of Science
We recommend interested graduates of the Bachelor's degree programs to enroll in one of our Master's degree programs in Mathematics, Economathematics, Technomathematics or Computational and Data Science, for which you are optimally prepared by the respective Bachelor's degree program. Here you will deepen your mathematical knowledge and be introduced to current research with your Master's thesis in an area of your choice.
The Master's degree program in Mathematics can be designed very freely and offers the opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge in mathematical areas of your choice.
The Master's degree program in Economathematics teaches the diverse interdisciplinary links between mathematics and economics in theory and practice.
The Master's degree program in Computational and Data Science combines model-based and data-driven methods from mathematics and computer science—i.e., computational methods, simulation and modeling, big data analysis, and machine learning—with their applications in the natural sciences, engineering, and economics. The program is mainly taught in English.
The Master's degree program in Technomathematics is geared towards applications in engineering and technology. The technical subject can be chosen from various engineering fields such as civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or experimental physics. (Course is being phased out; last possible admission to the first semester is in the winter semester 2026/2027)
For international students we offer a Master's degree in Mathematics taught in English.
Teaching at Gymnasium (German grammar school)
If you want to become a teacher at a Gymnasium, you study at KIT in the Bachelor and Master of Education programs, usually with two main subjects. The Master of Education (formerly: First State Examination) entitles you to an 18-month traineeship, which concludes with the State Examination (formerly: Second State Examination). Is a teaching degree in mathematics right for me?
Everything that makes the university an interesting place to study mathematics in Karlsruhe, also applies to training as a teacher: In cooperation with the music and art colleges represented in Karlsruhe, mathematics can be combined with the following majors:
- Computer Science
- Physics
- chemistry
- Biology
- Geography
- German
- Philosophy/Ethics
- Sports
- Fine Arts
- Music
In the first year of study, teacher training students attend the same subject lectures as Bachelor of Science students; it is only from the third semester onwards that there are mainly courses specifically for teacher training students. This polyvalence makes it particularly easy to switch between mathematics as a teaching degree and mathematics as a subject in the initial phase.
The training in the didactics of mathematics is very broad and practical thanks to the resident student laboratory and the cooperation with neighboring schools and the State Seminar for Teacher Training.
Information on the didactics of mathematics can be found on the website of the Department of Mathematics Education.
Engineering Education
The Bachelor's and Master's degree courses in Engineering Education train teachers who teach at vocational schools, work in industrial-technical training and further education or in company personnel development. The first of two subjects must be in the field of metal, electrical or civil engineering, and mathematics can be chosen as the second subject. For detailed information, please visit the Engineering Pedagogy degree course websites.
Especially if the engineering pedagogy is based on a completed engineering degree, a study consultation is recommended; contact person at the KIT Faculty of Mathematics is Prof. Hundertmark.
