Inability to take an exam
To prove that a student is unable to take an exam, they must submit a doctor’s note. Please note the following:
Deadline
The inability to take an exam must be reported in person or in writing as soon as reasonably possible after the condition arises.
For exams, the examiner must be informed. A medical examination to determine the student’s health status must take place on the day of the exam. The medical certificate must be submitted immediately.
Certificates must always be submitted to the office directly affected by the student’s absence due to illness or inability to take an exam.
-
In the case of exams, these are the examining departments, which act here on behalf of the examination committee.
-
In the case of an illness-related interruption of the degree program and a related application for an extension of the period of study, this is the Examination Board.
-
In the case of a semester on leave necessitated by illness, this is the Studying and Teaching business unit (SLE).
Information Required in the Medical Certificate
A medical certificate must contain the information necessary to enable the examiner or the Examination Board to determine the student’s inability to take an exam. A determination of inability to take an exam made by a doctor does not necessarily have to be accepted. It is also not recommended to specify the diagnosis or the illness itself on the medical certificate, unless the inability to take the exam is evident from this information alone (“feverish cold”). Ideally, a medical certificate should include not only the symptoms but also the impact on the student’s academic performance. It is also necessary to specify the duration of the illness—start date, (expected) end date—and the date of the doctor’s visit.
