About the department
The Department of Mathematics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology offers an attractive environment for students and researchers in an internationally visible university. We are active in many areas of mathematical research, provide our students with a high level of education and sustainably promote young scientists. Around 25 professors and 20 other lecturers research and teach at the department. In addition to students of mathematics, students of natural sciences and engineering also receive their basic mathematical training here.
Research at the department is divided into the four institutes of Algebra and Geometry, Analysis, Applied and Numerical Mathematics and Stochastics and it is bundled into three main research focuses: Partial Differential Equations, Geometry, Groups and Topology and Stochastic Models. Our researchers are involved in the Collaborative Research Center Wave Phenomena, the Research Training Group Asymptotic Invariants and Limits of Groups and Spaces and the KIT Center MathSEE. In addition, there are many individually funded research projects.
Teacher training is an important task of the faculty. The Didactics Group supervises our students and offers special programs for schools and school classes, such as the Math Lab.
