About the department
The Department of Mathematics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology offers an attractive environment for students and researchers in an internationally visible university. We are active in many areas of mathematical research, provide our students with a high level of education and sustainably promote young scientists. Around 25 professors and 20 other lecturers research and teach at the department. In addition to students of mathematics, students of natural sciences and engineering also receive their basic mathematical training here.
Research at the department is divided into the four institutes of Algebra and Geometry, Analysis, Applied and Numerical Mathematics and Stochastics and it is bundled into three main research focuses: Partial Differential Equations, Geometry, Groups and Topology and Stochastic Models. Our researchers are involved in the Collaborative Research Center Wave Phenomena, the Research Training Group Asymptotic Invariants and Limits of Groups and Spaces and the KIT Center MathSEE. In addition, there are many individually funded research projects.
Teacher training is an important task of the faculty. The Didactics Group supervises our students and offers special programs for schools and school classes, such as the Math Lab.

Am 14. März findet der Tag der Mathematik statt, ein Aufgabenwettbewerb für Schülerinnen und Schüler der letzten beiden Klassen der Gymnasien. Im Zentrum stehen der (zweiteilige) Mannschafts- und der Einzelwettbewerb. Parallel zum Einzelwettbewerb und zum zweiten Teil des Teamwettbewerbs gibt es jeweils einen mathematischen Vortrag, außerdem gibt es Informationen über berufliche Möglichkeiten von Mathematikerinnen und Mathematikern.

Manuel Krannich, Junior Professor at the Institute of Algebra and Geometry, has been awarded this year's "Academy Prize in the Mathematical and Scientific Disciplines" by the Niedersächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften. The department warmly congratulates Dr. Krannich on this award.
