Mathematics Choir

The Choir of the Department of Mathematics was founded on July 19, 2022 on the initiative of Lennart Flür by students of the KIT Department of Mathematics to sing together and to musically enrich the cultural life at the department and on campus. The Choir of the Department of Mathematics is now registered as a university group and recruits its more than 30 members mainly from the students and staff of the KIT Departments of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. We are a young, dynamic choir and an open community - and we are happy to welcome new singers, with or without choir experience!

Rehearsals take place on Mondays from 17:30 to 19:30 in room 0.014, please also see the notice board in the atrium. Anyone who is interested can simply come along and sing. A prerequisite for regular rehearsals and participation in projects is membership in the university group Department of Mathematics Choir. You can download the application form and the current statutes here. The rehearsals and projects are led by the director Rafael Hirsch, who is actively supported by a treasurer and a choir advisory board of several members.

The Departmental Choir is now an integral part of the department's events and regularly performs two concerts a year, a summer concert and a joint Advent sing-along. Rehearsals also include a choir retreat on a weekend during the lecture period.

Here are some impressions of the past concerts.

Advent Concert 2025

This year's Advent Concert of the Choir of the Department of Mathematics took place on December 10th, 2025, in the Gerthsen lecture hall. Under the motto “Christmas is coming”, we presented a colorful program from different musical eras. Among other pieces, works by Hassler, Rheinberger, and Rutter were performed in various instrumentations. Contributions from a string quartet completed the program. As in previous years, there were also Christmas carols for the audience to sing along to. Afterwards, we ended the evening with mulled wine, punch, and Christmas cookies.

Summer Concert 2025

The 2025 summer concert took place on Wednesday, July 9th, 2025, in the atrium of the mathematics building.

The roughly 60-minute program offered a summery and avied selection: choral works from different stylistic periods and in changing ensembles, including pieses by Monteverdi, Brahms, and Billy Joel. The program was complemented by smaller instrumental contributions from piano, flute, and a string quartet.

Advent Concert 2024

On December 11 our concert "Blue Christmas" was held in the Atrium, lasting one hour.

The concert featured jazz with modern and classical compositions in a wide range of ensembles. A jazz trio consisting of piano, drums, and bass accompanied the choir in the "Little Jazz Mass" by Johannes Matthias Michel. In the second part, a string quartet presented among other pieces excertps from Ola Gjeilio's "Winter Songs". Numerous choral works and smaller ensemble pieces, including those by Hugo Distler and John Rutter, completed the program - and, in keeping with tradition, there were also Christmas carols for the audience to sing along.
